The Hiker

THE HIKER

The rain fell.

Down
the slope
of the terrain
the water flowed
in rivulet

smoke arose
from the hiker’s fire

the synthesis of
smell, sound, breath and
body temperature
could be experienced
writing the wordless
nature poem

trying to relax
the DIY hiker
pulled his coat
more tightly around

sitting on the rock
and in a rock’s shade
he gladdened himself
with the thought
of having got away…

away from the grind
away from the city pollution
away from laborious tedium

this lasted
his three days of break
and it was time to return

he took one last glance
at the surrounding vista
clasping his packed gear
he ventured down the rocks
and earth
his mind already back
at civilisation’s demands

but his heart decided to stay.
